A Long Way Gone Chap: 1 and 2

The first page ashamed me. I cant believe that American kids would be that nieve about war. How can seeing people running around with guns shooting people be cool? At the beginning of the first chapter he is just like any other kid, listening to music, and running around with his friends. Then he sees the people that the rebels attacked, and his life really starts to change. This was sad to me because no one should have to be exposed to the harsher sides of life like that. One day they are going to see thier friends and grandma the next day they see people bleeding and dieing everywhere, I think that it would be hard to keep your sanity if you went through such an experience. Then in the second chapter you learn how badly the war still effects him. He is still having nightmares in the U.S.

I completely agree with this and can not believe that the american kids were like that as well. I do however disagree with you on the fact that you were surprised they thought having a gun running around was cool, because lets face it we all have played shooting games and thought they were cool, and that is what this war is like to them i think, just something in another country and that isnt real.

Yeah, i thought it was kind of like crazy also, in like the way it was going around. I also thought it was interesting how he was like showing how all this effected him in the today world.

This is a great discussion. I agree with you, Lee, that the first page really demonstrates how naive we are as Americans. You raise a good point too, Caleb, in pointing out that Americans tend to be desensitized to violence--until we face the reality of it.
